Michael Gruber has more than 40 years of experience in the entertainment business ranging from being tour manager for the Rolling Stones and exclusive operator of the Hollywood Bowl, to producer of La Cage aux Folles Variety Review that played to SRO audiences. His experience and expertise across the entire spectrum of the entertainment business has earned Gruber an unparalleled level of respect among his peers.
Gruber got started in the entertainment business at the age of 21 as National Promotions director for the Canadian American Record Company. A year later he became part owner and assumed the position of Executive Assistant to the President of the world-famous Lucayan Beach Hotel and Casino, Grand Bahama Island where he handled all of the entertainment needs for the hotel and casino. Gruber quickly became known within the entertainment community for his production competence and instincts for spotting new acts and groups that were ultimately destined to become headliners.
In 1965 Gruber became the tour manager for the Rolling Stones. Over the next four years he traveled the world with the rock group arranging and staging concerts and other events. In 1970 Gruber moved to Los Angeles where he discovered America’s answer to the Beatles, Moby Grape, and formed Personal Management Associates to manage them and other emerging groups including Taj Mahal, Love, Chi Coltraine and Group Therapy. Gruber also opened the Kaleidoscope, America’s largest rock dance club and Arthur’s Disco, the country’s premier celebrity hangout. Kaleidoscope hosted the who’s who of the entertainment industry including The Doors, The Mamas and Papas, Janis Joplin, The Jefferson Airplane and the Grateful Dead. A year later, Gruber and Bill Wyman of the Rolling Stones formed R.E.A.M. Productions to develop and manage new and upcoming European artists.
Gruber later secured exclusive rights to the world-famous Hollywood Bowl and featured top groups including Sly and the Family Stone, War, The Carpenters, Aretha Franklin, and the L.A. Symphony Orchestra. He also founded Great Western Gramophone recording company in partnership with CBS Records to promote projects like The Parliament Funkadelics Mothership Connection Road Tour, the biggest tour of its kind at the time. Gruber also promoted shows in Australia with talent including Stevie Wonder and Tom Jones, Sting, Andrea Bocelli and many more. In addition, he created and developed the College Satellite Network that produced cultural, musical and literary programs for colleges years before the Internet was born. Gruber next changed direction becoming a producer of La Cage Aux Folles variety reviews. This world class production played to S.R.O. audiences in San Francisco, Los Angeles, Honolulu, New York, Miami, Toronto, St. Martins and dozens of other cities around the world.
